Halloween Contest Entry
The Stuffie
There I was sleeping peacefully on Hallows Eve when I went to roll over and cuddle my Uni. I loved my Uni; he was the most important stuffie that I had. Probably the oldest too. I squeezed and felt my arm fold against my chest. There was no stuffie… I reached out and about, surely it had to be near but no.
“Uni…”
I rubbed my eyes and looked around the bed. Uni was given to me by my Big to protect me when he wasn’t around. So not having it means I wasn’t protected! THE PRINCESS MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS…Stuffie as well. I splayed my body across the bed in a frantic search for the beloved unicorn.
I kicked my feet around trying to get rid of the blankets and comforters, leaving behind the sheet for me to get tangled up in. That was no matter though because I still couldn’t find him, Uni.
Where could he be? It’s the middle of the night and Uni isn’t in bed with me… What horrors could have found him! He’s not on the bed, I don’t see him on the night stand. That means he could only be in one other place.
“THE FLOOR!”
Peeking over the edge of the bed I see Uni’s head looking up at me but the rest of his body is covered by the bed and shadows. The light from the nightlamp is perfect glow on him. I reach for my stuffie and my fingers barely just brush his furry coat.
“Hmphs.”
Reaching further this time, sure to grab the stuffie and be reunited with my lovely Uni, my hand grabs ahold of his face and I pull upward but to my surprise there is resistance.
“What the heck?”
Tugging a little harder this time I feel the stuffie get tugged back! I let out a squeal and released my beloved and squirmed to the center of the bed as Uni looked up at me while I disappeared. I couldn’t begin to understand what just happened other than to put my big girl pants on and save my Uni. I felt like puffing my chest out for courage but quickly lost it.
Scrunching my face up, I looked around the bed and began to wonder if there was anything I could use to help protect me since the stuffie was nowhere near me at the moment. I had an “aha” moment and grabbed the flat sheet that was still on the bed and wrapped myself up the rest of the way with it and made a makeshift hood.
“Don’t worry! I’m coming for you, Uni.”
Edging towards the side of the bed again I peeked over and this time I could barely see the round of the top of his head, but I could still grab his horn. Instead, I slid off the bed with a big girl gulp and took several deep breaths as my feet hit the floor. At that moment all I could think of was the Floor is Lava and it is so not the time.
Sliding the rest of the way down the bed, I lean over and look to see what had my Uni. I was surprised at what I had seen, and could not believe it, wouldn’t believe it if you ever tried to tell me such a thing.
“The heck!”
Turning to face me were two bunnies made of dust and lint fighting over random objects under my bed. Squeaking away until their eyes landed on me and they looked as surprised to see me as I was to see them.
“What do you think you are doing down here? The one squeaked.
“Me? This is my room and my bed and MY UNI!” I demanded.
Reaching for the unicorn they seem to have had the same idea as both of them grabbed a leg and left us pulling the poor stuffie three different directions. I started to worry about the likelihood of my poor Uni becoming a torn mess. I let go for the mean time and angrily looked under the bed to the two dust bunnies.
“What’s the big idea and where on earth did you come from. I wish you gone immediately.”
That didn’t seem to phase them as they hobbled about and finally let the stuffie go and argued over a sock before looking back to me.
“It’s the witching hour, don’t you know. During this time, we get a spark of life like the rest of the mundane we watch. Except we tend to gather things. It’s also that special time of year again… Halloween.”
“This doesn’t make sense as to why you stole my unicorn and refuse to give it back.!”
“Silly woman, he belongs to us now, and you will never see him again after we dissipate.”
Oh, these words made me angry. Angry enough to do the one thing I hate the most. Clean.
I stormed into the lounge and flung open the closet door and grabbed the hand-held dirt devil and stomped my way back to the bedroom. Dragging cord and all, I plugged in the device and flipped the switch “VRRRRRRRRRRM” and immediately darted under the bed. I found myself getting further and further under the bed chasing these dang lint goblins but finally I had gotten one and the other quickly fell without his brother.
Flipping the switch off I dropped the devil and looked to my unicorn. Leg stretched out on one side but still my precious thing. I clutched him to me and climbed back into bed thinking what an odd night it was. And how no one would believe a word of my encounter. Not that I could blame them…
Snuggling back up with the stuffie finally safe in my arms once more, I drifted off to sleepies despite the silly witching hour, forgetting all the pesky nonsense. Forgetting entirely to empty the handheld vacuum not realizing those mischievous bunnies could get loose again.
