It was not the most original costume, Vanessa was sure the Red Riding Hood costume had probably been done thousands of times, and this was probably the thousandth and first. Yet she had put a lot of work into the striking red hood over her long flowing brown hair, that came down past her shoulders out from the hood and down her chest.. The hood came down into an overcoat, and went down just below her hips. Underneath the overcoat she wore a deep blue lace shirt, with a black corset. The costume was finished off with a red skirt that came down to her knees. Black boots came well up her legs, and laces up the front of them, finished off the look.
Yet she was on her way to meet up with her friends and attend a Halloween party at her school. Later in the year it was already dark outside, yet she had walk these streets thousands of times already, as it was her normal path to head to school each morning. Yet something felt off, perhaps it was the strikingly large full moon hanging in the sky, or the crisp cool fall air, that did give her a bit of a chill, as she was wearing a skirt in this weather, yet there was nothing that would stop her from enjoying the night. Her parents were even willing to extend the curfew, after the mandatory lectures about boys, and parties, and drinking. Yet they were reasonable, and she had just only in the Spring turned eighteen so she could enjoy some freedom.
She was meeting her friends in a small park, in a small wooded area, just before the school. During the day the trees did not hide the tall city buildings even from the park, and usually during the night, you could easily see the light of the city. Yet the woods were thicker than usual, darker than usual. Perhaps it was just the sheer brightness of that large full moon that dulled everything out by comparison. Yet the wood was thicker than she remembered, as she approached, and as she took the step down the trail she had taken thousands of times. Then she heard it, a howl of a wolf… she was not sure how she knew it was a wolf, she might have seen one at the zoo, but she was in the middle of a city. It was unlikely this small little wooded park would be home to a wolf. Yet another how in response to the first would have her scanning around. It was not until she looked behind her, that a chill crept in, down her spine, frightening her… she could not see the street lights anymore, and she had barely entered the park. In truth as she scanned around, there should be a number of park lights. Taking a breath.. It must be her mind playing tricks… she would just keep walking and she should see a park light. Someone else probably just had some audio device playing some wolf howls nearby… she tried to reassure herself.
The woods felt unfamiliar, which should have just been her mind playing tricks, yet then she heard the snap of a branch… stopping and scanning around. The wood was definitely not familiar… the forest around her was silent… way to silent, there should be the noise of traffic, of cars, and trucks driving up and down the street she just left. There should be the sounds of children, trick or treating door to door, of families passing through this park from one street to the next. Yet it was dead silent. Then she hears footsteps… it was not the sound of a boot, but perhaps the running of a dog, without the jingle of its collar to accompany it. This must be some prank… it must… she reassured herself again, as she continued forward, yet there were more steps.almost silent, yet in the silence they could be heard… almost felt, as they sent tingles down her spine.
She sped up, she just had to reach the centre of the park it would not be much longer. Her pace longer, her steps quicker… yet those steps continued… and multiplied. She did not stop anymore, did not look around, she could not deny what she could hear. She could see the clear, the break in the trees, she must still be in the park. Yet that moment of hope, would be shattered as she saw it.. A wolf… no this was silly, she closed her eyes, shaking her head. Her imagination must be playing tricks on her, yet as her eyes open that wolf was still there… but it was huge, perhaps the size of a horse. It turned and faced her, its eyes almost glowing in the darkness, as it howled.. She froze… she could now see dozens of them, surrounding her. All larger than she thought they should be… peering behind she could see the eyes, she was surrounded and they were now closing in.
Sounds of Wings… large wings… flying… then suddenly a gush of fire as the large wolf in front of her yelped as his large frame was doused by fire. The pack scattered… she could feel and hear the wolves now regrouping… circling around whatever had caused the fire… that thing, the wings… had landed in the clearing ahead of her. Looking behind her the dark forest that she had just travelled… looking forward, the wolves, and whatever had caused the fire, was there… she should run.. Yet she was curious.. Slowly stepping forward, a loud piercing roar, a yelp from a wolf, another roar.. As she stepped forward.approached the clearing.
She could see it all now… yet she could barely believe it, the entire pack of wolves… huge wolves, was there. Surrounding a creature only slightly larger than themselves. Several of the wolves lay motionless, around him, and more still circled and approached. The wolves would attack, their teeth digging into the side of the creature, but fangs would close on one, claws swiping at another… and the large tail swinging, knocking some over.knocking some away, as some lept out of the way, yet fewer as they still circled in. A smaller circle this time. The creature moved a bit slower, yet a blast of flame would drive more away, engulfing a couple. Yet one would lunge, teeth biting into the creature's neck. As they would attack again. Yet he would raise his head into the air, and bring it crashing down to the ground. The wolf would yelp… and flee, yet not without carrying off a layer of that creature in its mouth, fleeing almost with its risky prize.
Each time the wolves attack, there would be few of them, yet not without inflicting pain on the creature there. Teeth into its flanks, tail and neck. Yet in time, there would only be the creature standing there. The wolves were not there, she would blink again as the wolves almost seemed to vanish in the night… not even the corpses of the ones that had been killed. Then the large creatures stared at her… “You are not supposed to be here” it hiss angrily… a large claw tending to the injury at its neck.
Trembling and frightened… she did not recognize the park, or the clearing. “I don’t even know where I am.” she responded trembling. She could flee, but that thing appeared from nowhere, did it fly, the massive wings at its sides suggest it did.
The creature took a breath in… “I know… but this is problematic. I highly doubt you want to remain here.”
“Where is here…?” she asked, still trembling..
“Between.”
“Between?” she repeated not understanding.
“Between your world, and the one I originally came from… a place that you unintentionally created just tonight.”
“I created…” she said in disbelief.
“In a sense. Yes. I am guessing, tonight, your magic just awoke… you have much to learn, but this place is hardly safe to train you. There is only one way I can think of to get you safely out of here, but there is a cost.”
“Cost?” she trembled… she was a student… she had a part time job… but was not certain what this creature meant.
“Yes a Cost… that cost is yourself. You must give yourself to me…” the creature spoke…
“Give myself…” she was even more confused.
“Yes… you must give yourself to me… there are multiple ways to do it, but most of them will take time and we don’t have it. Those feral kin will be back, and then they will take what they want and I doubt you really want to find that out.”
“I really don’t want to be eaten.” she said, trembling…
“There is far too much you don’t understand right now. Yet right now you have to simply agree to let me own you. It will only be by contract right now, and can be completed later in a better location. Especially when you fully understand what I am requiring you to agree to.” he says.
Looking at the creature, “I don’t know where I am…. I don’t know what you mean by owning me? I don’t even know what you are?” she was panicking a bit completely overwhelmed by the situation.
“Vanessa”... he spoke her name, “We know each other in your world. Not well, but you know me there as Micheal. I followed you here to help, and I still want to help. If you agree to this, we can both still attend that party, and there I will have far more time to explain what has happened. As to what I actually am, I am a Dragon, but I assure you I will explain more later.”
“Micheal” she did know that name… granted it was a common name, but it was a name of one of the guys of her group of friends. Not someone she had gotten to know yet. Yet as he spoke her name, his voice did suddenly sound familiar… yet she still struggled to connect that Voice, the creature, the Dragon in front of her, and the silent guy who went by that name. “What do I do…”
“Well first of all we need one of my scales… I know what one I want you to take, this will be a bit messy, but removing this scale will let me heal better as most of it is broken off. He shifted a bit, his large neck lowered down beside her, and she saw the wound…
“Your bleeding…” she replied, he was bleeding alot from his neck… she remember seeing that wolf bite his neck.
“Yes, the scale is broken, so it will take longer to heal until the rest of it is pulled free. It will be mildly painful for me, and rather messy for you, but we get what we need and you do me a favour.”
Nervously she touched his neck, the hard scale almost felt like touching rock, but had the coldness of touching metal on a cool day. Yet there was also warmth to the scale. Sliding toward the wound, just her tips of fingers suddenly were touching his blood, “Reach in, the scale will be rough, grip it firmly and pull it free, you might have to wiggle it a bit.
Not wanting to touch the blood, yet then she remember, he got this wound protecting her… saving her from those wolves, grimacing her hand slide into the wound, she could feel his warm blood, feel the edge of his scales, feel where a scale was missing, she moved up his neck, and found where the scale had broken, where that massive jaw had bit into his neck. The scale did feel loose, but she would have to send her secondhand into his blood to be able to shift the scale loose, as she did he would tense up, and a frightening growl emitted from him.
“Thankyou.” he uttered, twitching his neck a bit, stretching and wincing… “Stupid… “ he cursed in a couple words, not completely prouncable. “Now… for the unpleasant part. Extend your hand out, wrist up. I’m going to bite your wrist, just enough to draw blood.”
A look of fear crossed her face, yet she did remember the wound in his neck, if he wanted to hurt her, he would not be asking to do so.. Nervously she extended her arm as that large muzzle would surround it, she felt him close, felt a single massive tooth against her wrist. Then pain, as he bit down just there, a tongue gently flicked around the wrist as soon as that tooth withdrew, trembling as she saw her own blood from her wrist.
“Now place the scale against the wound on your wrist.”
She did, as the scale felt warm, the blood on her wrist would mix from the blood on the scale, and then the flow of blood would almost reverse, the pulling in her blood, as the scale itself almost seemed to be drawn into it.
“Look at the back of your hand.” he stated
Turning her hand, a single figure, what looked like a letter in foreign language was there, a single figure was there. “That is my name, in my own tongue. It marks you as mine.”
The symbol had a shade of dark purple, which she then realised was the colour of his scales, that she could not see well in the dark. Yet despite what he said, the symbol was not huge, and it looked kinda cool, and despite being bite, her wrist and arm felt fine. Yet a simple smile would cross her lips, she had wanted to getting a tattoo, and the thought of getting a needle was intimidating, yet after this a needle did not feel so bad.
“To get back home. Turn around and follow the path… keep going until you see the block you left. Do not leave the path, do not turn back towards here. Just keep going, and I will be able to get you back home..”
“Can’t you just fly me home….” she said as she turned away to look at the path she came from.
“Not right now, you entered here alone, and you have to leave as you came in. I don’t write the rules.” he then grins a bit, “This might be self serving, you might like Kevin, he has been indecisive in choosing between you and Sara on who to ask out. He is going to choose Sarah.”
Disappointed and somewhat scared that she would have to walk back through the forest alone, yet that last bit of news was like a punch in the gut. She was not sure who to be mad at, Kevin, Sarah, or this creature for dropping this news right now. Yet that knowledge, who she hung out with, heck who she was planning on meeting up with tonight, did give truth to who he said he was.
“I am going to hunt down the last few of these wolves. Do not worry, I will be able to keep an eye on you from the sky, even if I am not travelling with you. Plus I will have to treat this wound on my neck, before I show up tonight.” he would stretch his wings, as he took to the sky, the sheer force as he did so made her stumble backwards.
Alone, the woods around her even in the clearing did feel creepy. She could barely wrap her mind around what he said, what he did. Looking at her hand, she felt no pain from where he had bite her, and the symbol on the back of her hand was still fascinating, as she stroke a finger across it. Looking around, a slight chill tickled her spin, she was not going to find her way home, by standing here all night.
She traced her steps back to the path out of the clearing, and slowly started to follow the path backwards as she had been instructed. As she followed the path, the forest seemed to thin out around her, it felt less oppressive with each step, less unfamiliar. With each step she walked with more confidence. Yet a huge amount of relief would pass over her as soon as she saw a street light, then another… then the roof of the buildings, and finally as she stood on the street, she breathed a sign of relief… almost in a bit of disbelief at what had even happened.
Glancing over her costume, she wondered… the connection between this costume, and having to deal with a “bad wolf” have any connection…. Yet, she still had a party to get to, she was just going to take another way into the park, not exactly eager to double back on that trail at the moment.
A couple blocks later, she would approach the park again, this time taking the normal entrance, and she would see her group of friends almost immediately.
Kavin, Sarah, Rick, Sasha, Dan and Michael.
“Nessa, you're late.” Sasha called out to her… “If I had to watch Kevin and Sarah any longer, I might have had to gag.”
“Almost as late as Micheal and his shaving accident.” Dan harped in.
Micheal was holding a cloth up to his neck, “Bah, you just nick yourself, and these stupid little cuts like to gush blood.” Turning back to Dan, “And at least I have to shave.”
“True…” Dan looked away down to the ground.
Vanessa looked over at Kevin and Sarah, propped up on a park bench, Sarah almost in his lap. “Well I see you two are now an item”
“Yeah Sorry Nessa.” Kevin simply said.
“I would Date you in a heart beat… though I think Sasha might kill me for say it.” Dan blurted out, getting a cross look from Sasha..
“Oh don’t worry, Nessa is already taken” Micheal simply smiled making eye contact with Vanessa.
Pausing for a second… Micheal had never asked her out.. yet is this what he had meant about claiming her as his own. He had always never stood out that much in her mind, yet now he seemed to stand out more, as she did want answers as to what in the hell happened tonight.
“If we are all now couples, why in the hell are we going to this party?” Dan blurted out only to get an elbow from Sasha.
“Cause it's Halloween, there is candy and I get to enjoy seeing Nessa in this costume.” Micheal responded, wrapping an arm around Vanessa.
Grinning as she stroked her hand on his shoulder near the wound on his neck.. “I thought, woodsmen were supposed to have beards.”
Chuckling at her reference, “Not all.” Smiling at a joke only the two of them would ever understand.
